The Big Ramble

Sat 9th Oct 2010

The weekend kicked off with a Big Ramble introductory talk from Narosa Surf School about the area over a great selection of tea and coffee in Arnold's hotel. The ramblers discussed the adventures to come and were given maps, routes and information on the local area. A cloudless sky set the standard for the weekend and the ramblers embarked towards the summit under the experienced eyes of mountain leaders.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the breathtaking views from the half way point towards Downings and Glenveagh. For those who made the summit it provided the highlight of their year reaching a peak that had long eluded them. The triumphant ramblers returned to Arnold's to ceilidh away the evening. Spirits where high after an exhilarating day and in the spirit of new adventures a few new 'Big Ramble' jigs were born that evening alongside the more traditional dances.

Sunday the cobwebs where blown away by the early morning sun and all gathered to enjoy an informative briefing by Brendan Rohan before departing to horn head. We paused on route to set the scene for the walk and Brendan was on hand to explain that the arches in the bridge provide the clue to the complex history of horn head. Revealing that horn head is an island that is joined to the mainland by the sand dune succession from Tramore. A real insight into the human and natural history of the area was given by a traditionally Irish kilted Brendan. As the group made its may towards Tramore many interesting truths and tales where shared and enjoyed. The McSwyne's gun proved to be the pinnacle of the walk and was enjoyed by all that continued for the full loop. All returned to Molly's Bar to a huge spread of BBQ meats and salads making a very happy sight after a day's walking.

The first year of the Big Ramble has provided the platform for a great event in years to come. We hope with growing support and a great enthusiasm shown by the organizers, walkers and volunteers alike that this will be a fantastic annual event for Dunfanaghy.

Special thanks to Derek from Arnold's hotel, Ev from Molly's bar and Brendan Rohan from the Corcreggan mill without your support the weekend would not have been possible. Narosa would like to extend thanks to all that have made the 10km loop around Horn Head possible.

Thanks again to all for your support and we hope to see you and your friends next year, until then happy Rambling and keep checking www.narosalife.com for upcoming events.
